Books, Bites & Bubbles 6/14 Reflection
Sunday, June 14, we hosted our first book club and it was such a treat! Wine People by Michelle Wildgen was the pick for the month of June and we spoke fruitfully about the novel, wine, and life in general. What a joy to sit down with like-minded people and chat all things Books, Bites & Bubbles?
In Wine People, Wren and Thessaly - the novel’s two female protagonists - find themselves navigating the male-dominated wine industry in order to learn more about wine and advance their careers, all while determining the course of their own lives. Of course they have just as many challenges as they do celebrations both in their professional and personal lives, but their tenacity allows them to arrive at destinations which celebrate their perseverance and fortitude.
We sipped on American Wine Project’s ‘Flower Pop’ made by winemaker Erin Rasmussen and Maria’s own Tipsy Rose Sparkling Rosé. And yes, I know what you’re thinking - two wines purposefully and aptly chosen to reflect the female winemakers from the novel. Maria made a delicious tart and we snacked on berries and cheese. What more could you ask for? Sounds like a pretty perfect Sunday afternoon to me.
The resounding feeling I have reflecting on this first book club meeting is this: we are so lucky to be part of the NWC&G community. As I have quickly learned in my short time working here so far, Maria’s authenticity and intention behind her craft and community is unparalleled. It’s so special to “eat. drink. think.” with a group of people who are committed to learning from each other and celebrating life’s joys.
Our next book is The Paris Novel by Ruth Reichl. We will be meeting on Thursday, July 23 from 6:00-7:00 PM. Consider buying your copy of the text from Matriarch at 468 Thames St. to continue to support female creators. I hope to see you at our next meeting!
Cheers,
Sarah
